About the Adventure

Activity Level 3: Vigorous Location: Dead Man's Hollow Conservation Area, McKeesport Guide: Lindsay Dead Man's Hollow is a beautiful 450 acre conservation area managed by Allegheny Land Trust. It also has a spooky history filled with dark tales of criminal acts and untimely deaths. In 1874, a group of teenage boys found a body hanging from a tree. Many believe this tale is the reason for the name of the area. We'll learn more about the grim myths and legends that date back to the 1800s as we hike along the trails. We'll also explore the eerie industrial ruins of what used to be the Union Sewer Pipe factory. We'll use our headlamps and walk through an underground pipe. We'll climb the Enchanted Staircase, find the three-trunked sycamore tree, and check out Table Rock. Maybe we'll even experience the ghost that makes its presence felt each Autumn, rustling through the fallen leaves and making odd sounds. 👻 This is a 6 mile hike with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. There are several climbs and one short (15 foot) but steep climb up an embankment. The underground tunnel is about 12 feet wide and 12 feet tall. Headlamps provided.
