Activity Level 3: Vigorous (distance) Location: Laurel Summit, Somerset Guide: Lindsay Join us for the first in our "Fall on the LHHT" series of three autumn hikes along the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. This 10-mile hike showcases the breathtaking beauty of Laurel Mountain in Forbes State Forest as we explore the LHHT and other picturesque trails. We'll trek through lush patches of rhododendron and mountain laurel, pass through vast fern fields, and walk under towering hemlocks. Our journey will take us to Spruce Flats, a unique high-elevation bog, where we’ll pause to enjoy the windswept landscape. Continuing onward, we’ll reach Beam Rock Overlook, one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Laurel Highlands, with a panoramic view westward over Somerset and the LHHT below. The trail leads us through serene, fern-covered woodlands and past massive boulders with fascinating rock formations. Our final destination is Wolf Rocks, where we'll relax and take in the stunning 180-degree views as the sun sets. We'll rest on the rocks, enjoy a snack, and soak in the beauty of the season, hoping to catch the vibrant autumn colors at their peak. This marks our fifth annual Rocks to Rocks Hike! The terrain is relatively flat but features rocky paths and exposed roots, requiring mindful footing. We recommend hiking shoes with good tread and trekking poles. The total distance is 10 miles, with an elevation gain of 570 feet. There is also an option to shorten the hike to 6.5 miles based on how you feel during the day.
