About the Adventure

Activity Level 2: Moderate - Vigorous (Distance) Location: Mill Creek Metro Park, Youngstown, Ohio Guide: Abby Mill Creek Park is just outside of Youngstown, Ohio and is part of the Ohio MetroParks system. This park was established in 1891 and has the beauty, landscape, and architecture to show the history. For this hike, we'll take a series of trails along the waterways of Mill Creek crossing bridges, seeing waterfalls, and passing the historic Lanterman's Mills. This hike will truly bring your focus to the water and the beautiful sights and sounds of the waterways around every turn. We will start our hike alongside Newport Lake taking in the reflections of the water and sounds of various waterfowl along the shorelines. Then we'll follow Mill Creek all the way to Old Furnace Bridge passing the historic covered bridge, the suspension bridge from 1895, and several rock bridges listening to the sounds of the creek as it rushes beside us. As we cross to the other side, the trail is peppered with waterfalls big and small, beautiful rock formations, and sandstone overhangs. We will end the hike around a secluded area of the park listening and looking for the quieter lives of the wetlands such as frogs, ducks, blue heron, and more. This hike truly has something for everyone, especially those looking to find some joy with the water.
