Activity Level: Moderate Location: Toms Run Nature Reserve, Kilbuck Township Guide: Abby On many of our hikes, the conversation naturally turns to books - favorites, recommendations, ones we can't stop thinking about. So why not make it official? For this adventure, we're inviting you to hike Toms Run and bring a book or two to swap at the end. (Not a reader or don't have a book to share? You're absolutely still welcome - come for the hike and the company!) Tom's Run Nature Reserve is a quiet 369-acre respite tucked right off Route 65/Ohio River Boulevard in Allegheny County, protected by the Western Pennsylvania Land Conservancy - the same group that protects Bear Run, Fallingwater, and Beechwood Farms. The well-marked trail crosses Toms Run Creek in a few spots and winds through beautiful stands of mature maple, oak, and American beech trees. Along the way, a few trailside signs share the history of logging, farming, and residential development in the area, a little food for thought on the climb! We'll begin with a steady ascent to the top of the hill, then loop back down to creek level, returning to where we started. After the hike, we'll gather at the picnic table right at the trailhead to swap books, share recommendations, and maybe put together a little summer reading list.
