About the Adventure
Activity Level 4: Strenuous Location: Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, Somerset Guide: Lindsay This is a 2 night backpacking trip on the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail (LHHT.) We're building our backpacking skills in a supportive community of women and relishing an extended amount of time in nature. The timing of this trip is meant to correspond with the Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron bloom, but we'll see what Mother Nature has in store for us! Here's a basic breakdown of the trip: Friday at 5PM - Park our vehicles and hike 1 mile on the LHHT to our first camping spot. Both a shelter and tent sites are reserved. Saturday-Hike 8.2 miles on the LHHT with 971 feet elevation gain to our next camping spot. Both a shelter and tent sites are reserved. Sunday-Hike 8.4 miles with 549 feet elevation gain on various trails within Laurel Summit State Park with the last few miles on the LHHT for a return to our vehicles. Highlights of this experience are immersion in nature, an abundance of Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron, interesting rock formations, babbling mountain streams, laughter around the fire, sleeping under the stars, developing your backpacking skills, and pushing your comfort zone. Total distance for the 3 days is 17.6 miles. Total elevation gain is 1,640 feet. *There is an option to make Sunday a shorter hike for those who are wanting to head out earlier. Both tent sites and shelters have been reserved. Each backpacker is responsible for bringing all her necessary gear, food, and water. There are rustic restrooms near our sites. A detailed list of suggested gear and all the pertinent information will be provided to those who have registered. Limited to 12 backpackers.
