About the Adventure

Activity Level 2: Moderate Location: Library “T” Station, South Park, PA Guide: Meisha-lead, Lindsay-assist Starting at Library Station, we will begin our bike ride heading west on the Montour Trail. We will cross the Library viaduct, pass by the beautiful Arabian horse farm in McMurray, cross over numerous bridges, and through the Greer tunnel. Our turn-around point will be at the Tandem Connection in Hendersonville. We will stop for lunch (or ice cream) before making our way back the way we came! Total mileage for this out-and-back ride is 18 miles. The Montour Trail surface is crushed limestone. We will also be on the Arrowhead Trail section through Peters Township which is paved. This section does have a few more hills than you’d typically expect on a rail-trail. Total elevation gained is 780 feet. What kind of bike is best for this trail? Most people ride hybrid or gravel bikes. Some use mountain bikes. A road bike equipped with slightly knobby tires will also work. A road bike with slick, skinny tires is unsuitable for this trip. What equipment do I need? All participants must have their own bike (or rent one.) Helmets are mandatory. Other gear to have: • a spare tube • water (hydration pack; bottle with cage) • snacks/energy food • eye protection ( sunglasses or clear safety glasses) • padded bike shorts • bike gloves • rain gear, • saddle (underseat) bag to keep keys, phone, etc. WAC Biking Safety and Etiquette 1. Helmets are required and must be worn while riding. 2. Eye protection is strongly recommended. (sunglasses or clear safety glasses) 3. Using phones for talking or taking pictures while riding is unsafe and not permitted. 4. Front and rear lights are recommended. Lights are required for tunnels. (Headlamp is fine.) 5. We ride single file and maintain 1-2 bike lengths between riders. 6. We ride on the right side of the trail and pass on the left. 7. We use hand signals for turns and braking.
