About the Adventure
Activity Level 1: Easy Guides: Dr. Doug-Certified Forest Therapist, Lindsay-participant Location: Walker Park, Sewickley You’re familiar with the words “forest” and “bathing,” but how about when you combine them? Developed in Japan during the 1980s, Forest Bathing (in Japanese, its “Shinrin-Yoku”), or Forest Therapy, is more than just meandering through the woods; it’s an immersive experience where you consciously take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the forest. It’s not about doing anything strenuous or getting your heart rate up — rather, the point is to slow down and fully experience in your own individual way what the forest has to offer. Forest Therapy offers scientifically documented health benefits, including reduced stress, improved mental clarity, and boosted immune function. Your walk will last just over two hours. With Doug’s guidance, you’ll wander along our trails, stopping every so often for invitations designed to maximize being present and deepen your connection with nature. Even for the most dedicated nature enthusiasts, a Forest Bathing walk offers a uniquely refreshing experience of nature. Maybe the best thing about Forest Bathing is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. Just come as you are. No advance preparation is needed other than arriving ten minutes early for the walk and dressing appropriately for the weather. We will walk rain or shine, except when there is lightning or an extended downpour. BIO Doug Jones received his certification as a Forest Therapy Guide in 2020 from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs (ANFT). Prior to beginning his Forest Therapy practice, he worked as an independent psychologist in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and at Sewickley Academy for over 30 years. In retirement, his goal is to guide walks as a way of staying in service to others and nature. The encounters that occur during a Forest Bathing walk provide participants with the opportunity to recollect and embody their sense of being at home in nature and with themselves. The ANFT motto is: "The forest is the therapist, the guide opens the doors.” Group size is limited to 15 forest bathers.
