Activity Level 3: Vigorous (due to distance) Location: Laurel Summit, Somerset Guide: Lindsay This is a fantastic hike! Located atop Laurel Mountain in Forbes State Forest, we'll hike for 9.5 miles to various points of interest. We'll hike through huge patches of Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel, past vast fields of ferns, and underneath the Hemlocks. Our hike begins on the Wolf Rocks Trail. We'll pause at the rocks and take in the 180 degree views looking Northwest toward Ligonier and Southwest toward Donegal. Our hike continues through an area with large boulders and interesting rock features. We'll hike on the LHHT and up to Beam Rock Overlook, one of the most scenic mountain vistas in the Laurel Highlands. We'll look eastward over the treetops toward Somerset, the LHHT trail just below us. Our hike concludes with a stop at Spruce Flats, a high elevation bog. We'll take in the views of this vast, windswept space. Let's see what late autumn has in store for us atop Laurel Mountain! This is our 6th annual Rocks to Rocks Hike! (Wolf Rocks to Beam Rocks) The trails are relatively flat, however there are many rocks and exposed roots so mindful footing is important. Hiking shoes with good tread and trekking poles are recommended. Total distance is 9.5 miles. Elevation gain is 540 feet. There is an option to make this a 4 mile hike by opting to do Wolf Rocks only. You can make a game time decision on whether you prefer a 4 mile hike or a 9.5 mile hike on this day. 💌 Registered participants will receive an email with meeting location, suggested gear, and other pertinent info before the event.
