Activity Level 2: Moderate Location: Hillman State Park, Burgettstown Guides: Abby - lead, Lindsay - sweep In the heart of winter, evergreen forests offer a sense of steadiness and calm. Our "Evergreen" hiking series is an invitation to get outside during winter's shorter days, move our bodies, and soak in the peaceful beauty of green foliage that persists all year long. This Evergreen Hike takes us to Hillman State Park Hillman State Park, a quiet and mostly undeveloped state park west of Pittsburgh. The park encompasses some state game lands in addition to hiking trails, mountain bike trails, and a radio-controlled aircraft field! Mountain bikers know some of these trails as a roller coaster and it's not much different when you're hiking! For this hike, we're going to follow along three trails: Switchback, Abby, and Haul. Despite navigating across these three trails, you'll see it's a pretty well marked single track trail. There's not a ton of elevation gain on this trail (375 feet total), but, as the name suggests there are a lot of switchbacks across all three trails so it is a lot of back and forth. The switchbacks guide us through pine groves, dense forested areas, meadows, and more. Because this park is a bit isolated from the city and large roads, it is a quiet traipse through the woods listening to the sounds of nature.
