About the Adventure

Activity Level: Easy Location: Newark, Ohio Guide: Sarah, Site Superintendent + WAC Guide Abby to join Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the only one in Ohio! Come visit these architectural masterpieces and learn about the history and heritage of the site. Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks are gigantic earthen enclosures built by American Indians 2,000 years ago. They were places of ceremony connected to the cosmos by alignments to key risings and settings of the moon and sun. For this adventure, we will take a guided walking tour of two of the eight Earthworks sites: The Great Circle and the Octagon. We will start at the Great Circle for our tour and then take a 5-10 minute drive to the Octagon. These two sites used to be connected, which brings an even greater sense of fascination and amazement to these sites when you consider their size and spread. Details regarding meeting location, recommended gear, and other pertinent information will be emailed to registered participants.
