About the Adventure

Activity Level 4: Strenuous (due to distance) Location: Cumberland, MD Guides: Joe - lead, Megan - assist GAP Ride 10: Cumberland, MD to Frostburg, MD This last of the 10 rides on our quest to ride the Great Allegheny Passage Trail begins at Mile Marker 0 in historic Cumberland, Maryland. Starting from the Cumberland Visitors Center, we will make our way to Frostburg, MD. Along most of our route we will be riding beside and crossing the rail line of the historic Western Maryland Railway. We'll travel through the Cumberland Narrows and note the prominent “Lover’s Leap” outcropping on Willis Mountain. After crossing the National Road, we will begin our gradual yet continuous ascent towards Frostburg. We’ll ride though the Brush Tunnel as we continue on our 15.5 mile long ride to the Frostburg Depot Station. Our arrival will mark an elevation change of 1307 feet, and we get to cruise down that as we begin our return to Cumberland … WHEE! Average riding speed: 10 mph Total distance: 31 miles OPTIONAL: Spend the night in Cumberland and join us for a Sunday ride on the C & O Canal Towpath on Sunday morning. We've stayed at the Ramada by Wyndam on S. George Street. You can keep your bike in your room and breakfast is included. Call (301) 724‑8800 to reserve your room. OPTIONAL: 10:00-1:30 Sunday ride on the C & O Canal Towpath It’s been said, “If the GAP trail is seen as a paved two, lane road, then the C & O is a goat path.” In actuality, the C&O is a historic canal mule towpath. If you have an interest is experiencing the difference of riding the GAP and the C&O Canal Towpath, we’re offering a bike ride on the C & O on Sunday morning. Specific info regarding the ride will be available as we get closer to Autumn. Please join us for any or all of these offerings! Event details, including meeting location, suggested gear, and other pertinent info, will be sent via email to registered participants.
