About the Adventure

Activity Level: Moderate Location: Friendship Hill, Point Marion, PA Guide: Abby Friendship Hill is the site of former Secretary of the Treasury Albert Gallatin's home overlooking the Monongahela River. The original brick house was built in 1789 with a rich history before it was purchased by the Gallatin family. The 675-acre parcel of land surrounding the home has many interesting sites and pieces of history including grave sites of residents. The house was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and part of the National Park Service Historic Sites. For this hike, we will traverse 4.8 miles of the roaming fields, forest, and hillsides surrounding the home, passing by the Thomas Clare cemetery before descending toward the Monongahela River. We'll follow along the river to Gray's Landing Pool, which was originally a stone masonry dam system that provided an upstream pool in the river. From there, we'll head back up hill via wooden steps built into the hillside, and trek right past the house with the scenic overlook from the backyard of the house.
