About the Adventure

Activity Level 3: Vigorous Location: Tomlinson Run State Park, New Cumberland WV Guides: Abby - lead, Lindsay-sweep This hike takes us to Tomlinson Run State Park in WV, just across the PA/WV border. If you're familiar with Raccoon Creek State Park, Tomlinson Run is about 12 miles northwest of Raccoon. Let's go find out what is growing, chirping, frolicking, and swimming in the northern panhandle of West Virginia! Tomlinson Run State Park is a 1400 acre park with tons of trails, fishing, biking, and more. For this hike, we'll meet by the boat rental and snack bar then hop on the Fern loop for an incline into the woods, eventually winding back down the hill to the Tomlinson Run Lake. We'll follow the Bigfoot trail along the lake which is a great place to look for birds and geese-a-plenty! On the other side of the lake, we'll head up, up, up the Maple Trail to our highest elevation and then wind back down in the woods. At our lowest point we'll need to cross the Tomlinson Run Creek which does not have a bridge and doesn't have great rock scatterings for crossing. (Fun fact: I fell in, so I'll probably bring some sandals to swap out- trudge through- and then sock and boot back up on the other side.) Once we cross, we will hop onto the Dynamite Shack and Fuse trails to take us back to our cars! On Dynamite Shack, we will see the remnants of the dynamite storage shacks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps to store dynamite to clear the lands. Total distance: 5.6 miles Total elevation gain: 850 feet 💌 Registered participants will receive an email with meeting location, suggested gear, and other pertinent info before the event.
