About the Adventure

Activity Level 2: Moderate (rated for hours of activity; the trail itself is easy) Location: Roaring Run Trail, Apollo Guides: Meisha-lead, Lindsay-sweep This scenic 5-mile out-and-back hike is as rich in history as it is in natural beauty. We'll start along the banks of the Kiskiminetas River, where spring wildflowers line the wide, flat paths and the sights and sounds of the water set a peaceful tone for the day. After two miles of riverside walking, we cross a charming covered bridge and pick up the Rock Furnace Trail, named after one of the first iron furnaces ever built in Western Pennsylvania. From there, the trail follows the creek through dense stands of rhododendron and past dramatic boulder formations, with the ruins of the old furnace waiting to be discovered along the way. The adventure wouldn't be complete without a giggle-worthy crossing of not one, but two suspension bridges before we turn around and retrace our steps back. With only about 190 feet of elevation gain and well-maintained crushed limestone and packed gravel paths, this is a wonderfully accessible hike.
