About the Adventure

Activity Level 1: Easy Location: Raccoon Creek State Park Wildflower Reserve, Hookstown Guide: Ranger Shane + Abby to share the experience Let's celebrate another return of our Spring ephemerals with a State Park Ranger-led walk through the Raccoon Creek Wildflower Reserve. The Reserve is dedicated to the preservation of what is considered to be Pennsylvania's most abundant and diverse wildflower blooms. Starting from the Interpretive Center at the Wildflower Reserve, we'll walk for 2-3 miles with Ranger Shane, stopping a dozen times to learn about various Spring ephemerals such as Trillium, Blue Bells, Bloodroot, Cutleaf Toothwart, Yellow Trout Lilly, Spring Beauty, Bluets, Dutchman's Breeches, and more. Ranger Shane will also talk about other plants of interest such as Skunk Cabbage and Squirrel Corn. Prepare to be amazed by Ranger Shane’s deep botanical knowledge and entertained by his quirky sense of humor! Woodland wildflowers, known as Spring Ephemerals, are nature's gift after a long winter. These early woodland wildflowers occupy a short yet glorious moment in the early Spring woodland, blooming and setting seed during a small window of time between snowmelt and when the trees leaf-out. The wildflowers will be at their peak and most diverse during the latter part of April. Total distance for the Wildflower Walk is 2-3 miles. Elevation gain is approximately 190 feet. Event details, including meeting location, suggested gear, and other pertinent info, will be sent via email to registered participants.
